To diagnose and repair a clutch related issue on my Toyota Supra. To also fix a minor transmission oil leak.
Background:
It had become apparent that a clutch related issue had developed on my Supra. From time to time, the clutch would fail to disengage, preventingn smooth shifting between gears and sometimes even preventing gear engagement from a stop. Clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, hoses, fluid, and other external components had all been checked and determined to be operating properly. The transmission was removed and it was found that the clutch hub dampening springs had worn themselves into the clutch hub in an unusual way. The transmission had been experiencing a leak in the case mating gasket location. The transmission case was taken apart in order to allow for replacement of the gasket. A custom laser cut gasket was used to replace the old gasket. |
Results:
- Transmission reinstalled with new clutch which resolved the previous issues.
- Repaired transmission fluid leak.
- Root cause of clutch failure appears to be improper installation (dangling of transmission on input shaft/clutch) though no concrete evidence exists to support the theory.
